Interview for The Tribute Book by Mel Heappey, November 2001.

I Call Your Name, but what is it?

Mel.

When is your Birthday?

29th August, 19….. - mumble, mumble, mumble!

What band are you in?

The Beatalls.

Which Beatle do you play?

George (It's just a rumour!).

Which bands have you played with The Night Before?

Good Grief! Lots here and there, then and now, from 1969 'till now with a 20 odd year break ('Watching The Wheels Go Round' so to speak!). But in the 60's: VOID (me and our kid - 'Ringo'), in the 70's: Harry Greibson String Band, Luther (very heavy!), Lazy Day (with a recording contract) - can't remember the rest, but I can remember the faces and the good times - and they were good!

When did you first hear The Beatles - as a Little Child?

Yes! I was 9 or 10 when The Beatles 'broke' - loved them then and love them now, saw them as well! Not on stage, but leaving the ABC Theatre in Blackpool by taxi (George and Ringo for sure - wow, wow, wow!).

Tell Me Why you became a Beatle impersonator?

Help! Ian's fault! I think? Thanks mate! Really!

How did your band Come Together?

By chance really, although my brother Steve and myself were throwing Beatles songs around for fun, he was playing with The Beatalls as Ringo. The band 'needed someone' in the shape of a George and somehow I became The Beatalls 'George'! (Secretly I always wanted to be a John Lennon!)

Who is your favourite Beatle?

John!

What is your favourite Northern Song?

It Won't Be Long - Yeahh!!!!!!!!!!!

What is your favourite album?

A Hard Day's Night - and all the rest a close second.

What is the best thing about What You're Doing?.

Playing with and knowing the guys in the band - they're great!

We know that you've been Here There and Everywhere but where has been the best?

Now that's a hard one! Playing the German clubs in the early 70's was good and playing with a 'recording band' was great but the John Lennon International Airport, Lisbon gig and the Liverpool Convention gigs with The Beatalls are going to be hard to beat for me.

What have you done that has made you think - I should've Known Better?

Falling in love with a Gibson Cherry E (something or other) in the 60's when I was about 9 years old, owned by a great guy (who looked like Hank Marvin) - music in a hard mistress!

Tell me What You See yourself doing in 10 years?

Well you can be big-headed and think you can last 10 years, but we'll be lucky if we last 3 months, but seriously I'll probably be dead!

What will you do When You're 64?

I am 64!

Lastly, who was The Walrus?

The Walrus was Paul! I have it on good authority!
