Interview for The Tribute Book by Andy Birkett, November 2001.

I Call Your Name, but what is it?
Andy.

When is your Birthday?
18th July.

What band are you in?
The Beatalls.

Which Beatle do you play?
John.

Which bands have you played with The Night Before?
Various "own material" bands including Strangely Enough and Coup D' etat in the early 1980's; You Me & Him and SAD in the late 80's and early/mid 90's. All of these were based around Nottingham. Also briefly played in a covers band called Emergency Exit around 1987/88.

When did you first hear The Beatles - as a Little Child?
Yes. I was much younger than my brothers and sister who played the music in the sixties on my parents' stereogram.

Tell Me Why you became a Beatle impersonator?
I had once seen a Beatle tribute band playing in a bar and really enjoyed it (I'd never seen a tribute band before). Some time later I discussed the possibility of doing this with our "Paul" who I knew was a big Beatle fruitcake. Then out of the blue, a drummer we both knew said there was a gig going begging, but the client was after a Beatle band. So we persuaded the brother of our Paul to join as the "George" and we had a go. Someone at this gig liked us enough to ask if we'd do another for him. It just took off from there.

How did your band Come Together?
See previous answer. After a year or so, the original drummer left and our current one (Steve) joined having answered our advert. He turned up to the audition with a 1962 Ludwig kit - need I say more. About another year after this we lost our George (the brother of our bass player). However, we kept the sibling connections going. The drummer's brother joined us as our new "George".

Who is your favourite Beatle?
John.

What is your favourite Northern Song?
I don't have one favourite, but I tend to prefer the John Lennon penned songs.

What is your favourite album?
The White Album.

What is the best thing about What You're Doing?
We always go down great and that is very thrilling.

We know that you've been Here There and Everywhere but where has been the best?
Well you tend to remember the recent gigs the most vividly. We've had some real corkers of late including this years convention in Liverpool (we played Chavasse Park, The Cavern and The Adelphi Hotel) The audiences are really up for it. We also recently played a spectacular outdoor gig for the Oxford University (New College) and just last weekend played to 1200 people at a venue in Lisbon, Portugal.

What have you done that has made you think - I should've Known Better?
We once played to a couple of dozen Japanese businessmen at a hotel in Manchester - very awkward!

Tell me What You See yourself doing in 10 years?
I hope I'm still playing with The Beatalls, but there is probably a time limit for us. Old looking Beatles don't tend to carry quite the same credibility!

What will you do When You're 64?
I hope I'm still playing something, but it's unlikely I could still be a credible John at such an age.

Lastly, who was The Walrus?
Paul.
